Critters & Weather

*2025 Update! It's the week of Halloween and after three weeks-ish, about .01% of pumpkins have nibbles. That's 1 pumpkin at each of a very few homes. At those very few homes, the squirrels have targeted one plain orange pumpkin, so I've moved that pump into the bushes. Let them have it and consider it a "squirrel sacrifice." Most homes have no nibbles. My spray service works!

We know squirrels are the ninjas of the suburbs. Upon purchase, we’ll offer tips on sprays and deterrents that are safe for dogs but can be effective against critters.

The only real way to keep them off your display is to spray the pumpkins with hairspray. (And a couple sneaky ones still might take a nibble.) But please note that if you spray your pumpkins with hair spray (Aqua Net is the best!) or other chemicals, we can’t collect them because they will no longer be safe to feed farm animals. If you can get rid of the pumpkins after Halloween yourself, spray away!

Heck, Aqua Net pumpkins just might last through Thanksgiving.

If you decide to spray with chemicals, we suggest you dispose of your pumpkins at a local Pumpkin SMASH event. There's one near you.

If it’s a hot or rainy October, that’s not optimal for pumpkins.
